From Cochin International to Kuala Lumpur

For travellers from Kerala, Malaysia is close, affordable and easy to organise. Non-stop flights from Cochin International Airport (COK) at Nedumbassery reach Kuala Lumpur in around four hours, and with several airlines on the route you usually have a good choice of departure times. Malaysia is two and a half hours ahead of India.

Plenty will feel familiar. The warm, humid climate is close to what you know at home, and Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur's Little India, is full of South Indian restaurants serving banana leaf meals. The skyline, theme parks and island scenery, though, are a world away from a weekend in Munnar.

Tips for travellers from Kerala

  • Cochin International is at Nedumbassery, north of the city, so allow roughly an hour from Ernakulam and more at busy times.
  • Keep your return ticket and hotel confirmation handy, as you may be asked for them on arrival.
  • Pack light cotton clothes, plus a scarf or shawl for covering up at places of worship such as the National Mosque.
  • Lunches, dinners and theme park tickets are extra, so budget for them. Brickfields' banana leaf restaurants are good value.

Visa and the best time to go

Depending on entry conditions at the time, Indian travellers may need an eVisa. Documents usually asked for are a passport with six months' validity, confirmed return tickets, a hotel booking confirmation and a passport-size photograph. Rules change, so read our Malaysia visa guide as general guidance and check official Malaysian government channels before booking.

February to September is generally a good window for outdoor tours and island trips, and if Langkawi beach time is the main draw, the first few months of the year tend to be the most settled. Our best time to visit guide has a fuller picture.
